About the studio

Hook Echo Sound is a recording studio operated by me, Chris Harris.  It is located in Studio B at the beautiful, new Bell Labs Recording Studio facility.  Bell Labs is a giant, gorgeous studio.  Studio B is tied in to every square foot of fantastic tracking space, including a large live room, 4 separate isolation booths, and a lounge that happens to be one of the best sounding reverb rooms that I’ve ever heard.

About Chris

I’m Chris Harris.  I have been recording things for as long as I can remember.  I was amazed by tape recorders as a child.  I started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 17.  I started recording what I was playing around the same time. I’m insanely inspired by anything (live, recorded, natural, or synthesized) that sounds cool.  I have a passion for music and a drive to understand sound.  I figure that the more I understand why something sounds the way it does, the more I’m able to express and help others express whatever we want to with sound.

I started recording other bands besides mine in 2000.  Over the last 10 years, I’ve recorded with many bands with both national and local releases.  Many of these records are available from the bands themselves, from local record stores, and from iTunes and other digital outlets.  I’m a self-taught audio engineer.  I learned almost everything that I know about engineering from:  TapeOp Magazine, the good folks at the TapeOp message board, a recording workshop with Larry Crane (Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus, The Shins, etc.) at Jackpot! in Portland, OR., and working with and chatting with my friend, Trent Bell, owner/operator of Bell Labs Recording Studio, the facility that houses Hook Echo Sound.

I was formerly a member of the late-90s/early 00s rock band, Subatomic Pieces.  I currently play full-time in two bands, Depth & Current and Ancestor.

About Your Project

I’m available for producing, recording, mixing and/or mastering your music.  I also work with a lot of home-recordists, helping with tracking of drums or other important sounds and/or mixing and mastering home-recorded projects, or projects that were tracked in other studios.  I’ve also done audio production/mastering for video projects.  I have some experience with audio restoration and audio forensics.

I also offer an audio consulting service.  I love to help people get the best that they can out of their home recording experience.  I’ve also helped bands make the most of their resources for acoustics and gear in the practice space.

Please contact me via email to discuss your project.
